Garry Francis Bates was born at Royal Women’s Hospital in Paddington, Sydney in New South Wales, Australia on 18 November 1927.
He was a valued member of Guanaba Country Music Club. He was always eager to put his hand up to assist in whatever had to be done at our clubhouse.
He was part of the trio of a group that received the nickname of “Dad’s Army”. The group consisted of Garry (Happy), Leo (Grumpy, his brother) and Ian Haydon & provided an enormous amount of time & effort when we were converting our clubhouse into the place it is today.
Garry “Happy” Bates was a familiar face at our socials and he & Ian continued the team on by looking after our bar.
As a result of Garry’s hard work and dedication the club awarded Garry the prestigious honour of being made a life member, and was a very proud recipient of this award.
Garry passed away on 25 September 2008. A large crowd turned out for the service, conducted on Friday 3 October at Staplyton QLD.
RIP Garry Bates
